RE: Alaska/Yukon Border Crossing

I just crossed the border into the US at Coutts Alberta/Sweetgrass Montana. If you do not have a current passport, you WILL need both a birth certificate and drivers license. They also asked about my pet records but did not want to see them. Read the Know Before You Go information on the US Borders website. The border agent appreciated the fact that I turned off my diesel while at the gate. Pretty straight forward question just be prepared and you will be fine.

Fort Nelson to Dawson Creek

Mostly uneventful drive. Some beautiful scenery and good roads. Be careful on the steep declines. The Alaska Highway is behind us! We are traveling down the east Access route. Satying at Country Roads RV in Grande Prairie Alberta. Very nice place kinda out in the middle of a field but they have a nice set up for RV's. Super Clean Showers. No more post from me at this time. Loved the Alaska Highway! Safe travel to all!

Watson Lake to Fort Nelson

Wow what a day. This drive was intense. To start out the road was good rolling right along. Just after Contact Creek (diesel at Contact Creek is much cheaper than in Watson lake recommend you fill up) we started to see buffalo, they are scattered along the highway all the way to Laird River. After Laird River Hot Springs mile DC 497 all the way to Steamboat Creek area around mile DC 322, the road narrows very windy & bumpy with lots of steep inclines and declines as it follows the river. The road is boardered by steep cliffs with falling rocks on one side and the river on the other. You must watch for on coming traffic and most of all animals. Did I mention the animals, they are every where. We had to stop for Stone sheep and Caribou in the road, they would not move until we were right up on them. Remember traffic behind you is coming fast! Besides being dangers, the animals we very interesting and gave plenty of photo ops. We also saw wolf, moose, elk, deer, all right near or on the road. This area is beautiful but plan accordingly so you can take your time to see everything and to be safe. If the big trucks get on your butt find a pull off and let them go. In Fort Nelson we stayed at the only RV park open right now, Westend RV. It was ok at best, but I don't think there is much better option in Fort Nelson. Safe travels to all.

RE: White Horse to Watson Lake

we paid $1.375 per liter (that is $4.52 a gallon I believe)for diesel at Gas Loc in Whitehorse. If you stay at Downtown RV in Watson Lake, Archie the host will give you the name of a station in Teslin that has lower price diesel prior to getting to Whitehorse.

White Horse to Watson Lake

What a great day! The weather was sunny about 50 all day. The road from Whitehorse south starts out kinda bumpy, not big bumps just lots of small irrating bumps for the first 40 miles or to the Yukon River Bridge. Beyond that all the way to Watson Lake was great smooth sailing with the occiasional pot hole or frost heave we traveled right 60 MPH (100 Kilometers)all the way. This section of highway takes you through the Cassier Mountians. It has alot of long windy inclines and declines. it was a beautiful trip. Watch fror Caribou, we did see a few right in the road. We are staying in Watson lake at Downtown RV. The camp sites are not real impressive but the accomidations are very good, laundry clean restrooms with unlimited showers, satellite TV, free WiFi and very close to the Sign Forrest. On to Fort Nelson tomorrow. hope to post again then. Safe travels to all!

Tok Alaska to WhiteHorse Yukon Territory

leaving Tok Alaska pulling the fiver, the highway was good but got progressively worse toward the US Border. The 20 miles between the US border and the Canadian border was pretty rough didn't appear much repair has been done lately lots of loose pea gravel on the road. Going through Canadian customs was easy but I was prepared so I had the answers to their questions, the milepost has a very good section to prepare you for crossing. They did check my dogs health certificates but that was all I had checked. Very smooth thank goodness. The road from the Canadian border to about milepost DC 1140 (dawson creek in the milepost) was ok mostly 55 few well marked frost heaves. They are marked with red flags along side the road. SLOW down when you see a flag especially on your side of the road. The stretch of road from milepost DC 1140 to Destruction Bay was terrible! Continuious bumps, breaks frost heaves about every kind of bump you could have it was slow going 45 tops mostly around 30 to 35. Definitely shakes your fillings! Shortly after Destruction Bay around the south side of Kulane lake there is a five mile stretch of narrow gravel road. It is pretty smooth but much more narrow than the main highway. After Kulane lake it was smooth sailing on into Whitehorse. Sorry this is backwards for most of you but that is how I have been dealing with the milepost the whole trip, backwards! Watson Lake tomorrow, hope to post from there. Safe travels to all.

Heading South from North Pole

well the trip south pulling my fiver down the Alcan has begun. I left North Pole Alaska this afternoon. It was snowing in North Pole when i left but the road was only wet not icey. North Pole weather is calling for light snow through the weekend. The drive down the Richardson highway to Delta Junction was good. road conditions are real good only a few scattered frost heaves, nothing to worry about. Shortly after Delta on the Alcan the weather cleared up, road conditions were great. We easily pulled right along at 65, very few bumps in the road. Arrive Tok Ak weather is beautiful right aroung 50 and dry. We are staying the night at Tok RV Village. this is a very nice place. Currently it has limited services but I would would definitely stay here when you travel through. We'll be on the road to whitehorse yukon territory tomorrow. Hope to post an update from white horse. If anyone is travelling north I would appreciate any info you can share. We will be using the east access route.
